About

Hi Lost Money is a personal project dedicated to helping people find and reclaim unclaimed money that’s rightfully theirs.

Why This Site Exists

Billions of dollars in unclaimed property sit with state and federal governments across the United States. The problem? Most people have no idea the money is there, and the government databases can be slow, fragmented, and difficult to navigate.

I started Hi Lost Money after successfully claiming my own unclaimed property from the State of Hawaii. That experience opened my eyes to just how much money is out there waiting to be claimed — and how hard the existing tools make it to find.

So I downloaded the publicly available unclaimed property data, starting with Hawaii and then California, and began analyzing it myself. I found patterns, interesting data points, and stories buried in the numbers that I thought were worth sharing.

What You’ll Find Here

This site offers two things: data analysis and practical guides.

On the data side, I break down unclaimed property records by state, showing which companies hold the most unclaimed funds, what types of property are most common, and other insights you won’t find on the official government sites. Currently I have data for California, with more states planned.

On the guides side, I write step-by-step instructions for searching every major database — state unclaimed property offices, the FDIC, TreasuryDirect, bankruptcy courts, and more. Start with the complete guide to finding unclaimed money if you’re new here.
